ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday wondered whether people of Israel and India feel outraged at how far their respective leaders will go to win elections.

In a Twitter post, the premier wrote, “When leaders in Israel & India show a moral bankruptcy in their readiness to annex occupied West Bank & IOK in defiance of international law, UNSC resolutions & their own Constitution for votes, don’t their people feel a sense of outrage & wonder how far they will go simply to win an election?”

Indians will head to the polls from Thursday until May 19, which will decide if Narendra Modi will run the country for another five years. Modi’s main rival is opposition leader Rahul Gandhi.

Modi’s right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come under fire over its handling of the Indian economy, particularly its failure to create jobs for the millions of youths coming on the labour market each year and the severe debts hitting farmers.

The BJP has made a new pledge to scrap a law that gives special privileges – such as preventing outsiders from buying property – to residents of Indian-occupied Kashmir.

Modi’s party also said it was committed to building a grand Hindu temple in place of a Muslim mosque demolished by Hindu mobs in the city of Ayodhya in 1992.

ISLAMABAD: More than half of Pakistanis hold a favourable opinion of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s performance during his first five months in power, a survey conducted by Gallup Pakistan and Gilani Foundation has revealed.

According to the survey findings, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked about their opinion on Prime Minister Imran’s overall performance since winning the July 2018 general election.

In response, 13% said ‘very good’, 38% said ‘good’, 26% said ‘bad’, 20% said ‘very bad’, while 3% did not know or did not wish to respond.

Urban respondents were found to be significantly more upbeat about the prime minister. From among urban respondents, 15% thought that Prime Minister Imran’s performance has been very good up until now, while 44% said that it had been good, 23% said that it had been bad, 16% said very bad, and 2% did not know or did not wish to respond.

On the other hand, from among rural respondents, only 12% said that it had been very good, 35% that it had been good, 27% that it had been bad, 22% that it had been very bad, while 4% did not know or did not wish to respond.

The premier appears to enjoy a better approval rating among millennials, the poll found. Respondents in the under-30 age group rated Imran Khan’s performance most highly. 15% said that it has been very good, 40% said it has been good, 19% said bad, 24% said very bad, while 2% did not respond.

Among the 30 to 50 age group, 14% said that it has been very good, 37% good, 27% bad, 18% very bad, while 4% chose not to respond. Among the 50+ age group, only 3% said that it has been very good, 40% that it has been good, 39% that it has been bad, 12% very bad, with 6% choosing not to respond.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan vowed swift action against the personnel of the Counter-Terrorism Department if found guilty by a joint investigation team formed to probe Saturday’s alleged encounter in Sahiwal that left four people dead.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, the premier expressed his shock at the incident and said the state will look after the children whose parents were shot dead by the CTD.

“Still shocked at seeing the traumatized children who saw their parents shot before their eyes. Any parent would be shocked as they would think of their own children in such a traumatic situation. These children will now be fully looked after by the state as its responsibility,” he tweeted.

The prime minister, while lauding the CTD for its fight against terrorism, asserted that everyone must be accountable before the law.

“While the CTD has done a great job in fight against terrorism, everyone must be accountable before the law. As soon as JIT report comes, swift action will be taken. The govt’s priority is protection of all its citizens,” he wrote.

Four people – including a husband, wife and their teenage daughter – were killed while their minor son received bullet wounds in an alleged shootout in Sahiwal on Saturday. CTD personnel said they had killed a local commander of militant organisation Daesh and three others in the operation. Eyewitnesses, however, disputed the claim and said the people in the car did not fire at officials, nor were any explosives recovered from the vehicle.

ISLAMABAD:(Net News/Media 92 News) Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif met his brother and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif at the Parliament House on Thursday.

Nawaz entered the Parliament House through the backdoor and even spoke secretly to Shehbaz in the corridor, according to sources.

“During the one-on-one meeting between the Sharif brothers, the accountability court’s verdicts in the remaining two corruption references against Nawaz and other matters were discussed,” sources added.

“The brothers agreed to start a mass contact movement if the verdict is against Nawaz and to remain silent if the court’s decision is in their favour,” the sources further said.

An accountability court on Wednesday reserved verdicts in the remaining two corruption references against former premier Nawaz Sharif.

The court will announce its verdicts in Flagship Investment and Al-Azizia references against the Sharif family on Monday, December 24.

The trial against the Sharif family commenced on September 14, 2017.

On July 6, after four extensions in the original six-month deadline to conclude all three cases, the accountability court announced its verdict in the Avenfield reference. Nawaz, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar were sentenced to 11 years, eight years and one year, respectively, in prison.

Nawaz and his sons, Hussain and Hasan, are accused in all three references whereas Maryam and Safdar were accused in the Avenfield reference only.

The two brothers, based abroad, have been absconding since the proceedings began last year and were declared proclaimed offenders by the court.

JERUSALEM: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu´s eldest, Yair, tweeted on Sunday that Facebook blocked his page for 24 hours over apparent anti-Muslim posts and called the leading social network a “dictatorship”.

In a message posted Thursday on his Facebook page, Yair Netanyahu had called for “all Muslims (to) leave” Israel.

“Do you know where there are no attacks? In Iceland and in Japan where coincidentally there are no Muslims,” the prime minister´s son wrote.

In another post he wrote that there were only two possible solutions for peace, either “all Jews leave (Israel) or all Muslims leave”.

“I prefer the second option,” he added.

His comments came after two soldiers were shot dead on Thursday at a central West Bank bus station near a settlement.

On the same day, a baby prematurely delivered after his mother was shot and wounded in a separate attack nearby on December 9 also died.

Facebook deleted Yair Netanyahu´s posts, prompting him to take to Twitter to criticise the social networking giant, calling it a “dictatorship of thought”.

Critics of the prime minister have often attacked Yair as a grown man living in the premier´s residence despite having no official role and benefitting from a bodyguard, a driver and other perks.

They say the parents of the 27-year-old are grooming him for future political power in an attempt to establish a ruling dynasty.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan will address the nation today as his government completes its first 100 days in office.

The premier is scheduled to take the nation into confidence during his address at Convention Centre, Islamabad on Thursday afternoon, where a ceremony will be held to mark the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) 100 days in power.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, who will be the chief guest on the occasion, will review the performance of his government since it was voted into power in the July 28 election. He is also set to make some important announcements.

The ceremony will be attended by all federal ministers, advisers and PTI workers.

Earlier this week, the premier called an important meeting at his Bani Gala residence to review his ‘100-day plan’, where PTI ministers, divisions and ministries presented their reports related to the 100-day performance.

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif began recording his statement during a hearing of Al-Azizia corruption reference against him on Wednesday.

Accountability court judge Muhammad Arshad Malik resumed hearing the Al-Azizia corruption reference against the former premier today.

As the hearing got underway, Judge Muhammad Arshad Malik summoned Nawaz on the rostrum where he asked the former premier if it was correct that he had held public offices. To this, Nawaz affirmed that it was indeed correct; he had served as prime minister three times, chief minister, finance minister and opposition leader.

Nawaz further said that he did not hold any public office from 1999 to 2013, and was in exile from 2000 to 2007.

Nawaz’s counsels objected to some questions listed on the questionnaire, as the former prime minister pointed out that some of the questions were based on rumours while a few others were ambiguous in nature.

During a previous hearing of the reference on October 30th, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor Wasiq Malik had informed Judge Muhammad Arshad Malik that the watchdog had completed presenting its evidence against the accused in the reference. A total of 22 witnesses were produced before the accountability court since October last year, following Nawaz’s indictment in the Al-Azizia/Hill Metal Establishment reference, he had told the court.

The accountability court has until November 17 to wrap up the remaining two corruption references – Al-Azizia and Flagship Investments – against the Sharif family. The Supreme Court had granted final extension to the court last month, after its deadline to conclude the trials against the Sharifs had ended on October 7.

BEIJING: The Chinese foreign ministry on Monday said Prime Minister Imran Khan’s upcoming visit to Beijing presents important opportunities for leaders of the two sides to “chart the course for the future development of bilateral relations under new circumstances”.

Prime Minister Imran Khan will pay an official visit to China from November 2 on the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang and President Xi Jinping.

Addressing his regular press briefing in Beijing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said, “During his visit, President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and other Chinese leaders will meet and hold talks with him.”

“The two sides will have an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest,” he added.

The spokesperson further said that PM Imran will also attend the first China International Import Expo in Shanghai.

Lu Kang expressed confidence that bilateral relations between China and Pakistan would not be affected by changes in the international and domestic situations. “I would like to stress again that China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic partners for cooperation. Our friendship goes back so long and our political mutual trust enjoys such a solid foundation that China-Pakistan relations are immune to the changing international and domestic landscapes,” he said.

“Recent years have seen frequent high-level exchanges, rapid growth of practical cooperation in various fields, especially the building of the CPEC which has yielded fruitful outcomes, and the ever-strengthening of bilateral friendly ties,” he added.

Speaking about the new government, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said, “The new Pakistani government has reiterated many times that it is committed to developing its friendship with China and looks forward to deepening bilateral cooperation.”

“China hopes that through Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit, the two sides could comprehensively align development strategies, continuously deepen all-around cooperation, and elevate bilateral relations to a new height,” he added.

ISLAMABAD: Director General of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Rawalpindi Irfan Mangi on Thursday met the judges hearing corruption references against the Sharif family.

Mangi arrived at the Judicial Complex in Islamabad, where he met with accountability court judges Mohammad Bashir and Arshad Malik, sources informed Geo News.

They said the meeting took place in the chamber of Justice Malik after the time for judicial proceedings had ended. The meeting lasted for one-and-a-half hour.

The sources further said the supervisor of Panamagate prosecution team, Sardar Muzaffar, was also present at the meeting.

It is pertinent to mention here that Justice Bashir had given the Avenfield properties reference against former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law.

Nawaz was sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison and slapped a £8 million fine in the Avenfield properties reference while his daughter Maryam was sentenced to eight years with a £2 million fine. Nawaz’s son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar was given a one year sentence without any fine.

Justice Malik has been hearing Alazizia and Flagship references against the former premier and his family.

Reached for comment on the meeting, Mangi said they faced issues including the issue of an office for investigating officers.

“Our lawyers have a small room here; there is air conditioning problem as well,” the DG NAB said. He said the Panama case had concluded and now they had nothing to do with these references.

“We are not even a witness in these cases now,” he said. “Whatever is to be now is to be done by the courts.”
