Julen Lopetegui’s days as Madrid coach still look numbered despite seeing the reigning European champions beat Viktoria Plzen on a night in which both Bayern Munich and Manchester City won on the road.

It is just one win in seven matches now for Jose Mourinho’s United after they went down to defeat against an accomplished Juventus, who were worthy victors.

After facing uncomfortable questions on the eve of the game over rape allegations made against him in the United States, Ronaldo played his part on the field for Juve back at the ground where he was once idolised.

He played a key role in the winner as it was his cross, aimed at Juan Cuadrado, which ended up falling for Paulo Dybala to tuck home in the 17th minute.

Ronaldo also forced a superb save from David de Gea, while Paul Pogba struck the post for United, who drew another blank at home in Europe after a 0-0 draw with Valencia three weeks ago.

Juventus have maximum points after three games in Group H, and host Mourinho’s side in Turin next.

“Juventus is a different level of quality, I have to be honest. A level of quality, stability, experience, know-how,” Mourinho conceded.

“I have no complaints with my boys. I have a positive feeling for their effort.”

The good news for United is that they remain second in the group after Valencia were held to a 1-1 draw by Young Boys in Switzerland.

Michy Batshuayi put the Spaniards ahead, but Guillaume Hoarau’s second-half penalty gave Young Boys their first point.

Lopetegui still fragile
Lopetegui’s position in charge of Real remains fragile despite his side claiming a first win in six games by beating Viktoria Plzen 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

David Silva and Aymeric Laporte scored before Bernardo Silva sealed the win with a brilliant goal within seconds of coming off the bench in the second half.
After losing at home to Lyon in their Group F opener, City have now won back-to-back games on the road and the result in the night’s other match went their way.

Brazilian forward Joelinton’s stoppage-time goal earned Hoffenheim a 3-3 draw at home to Lyon, allowing City to lead the group from the French side.

Andrej Kramaric netted twice for Hoffenheim in between strikes from Bertrand Traore and Tanguy Ndombele, but Memphis Depay appeared to have won it for Lyon before Joelinton intervened.

“In Europe, 0-3, we were outstanding,” Guardiola told BT Sport. “If we are able to win the next game Shakhtar will be out. After our defeat in Lyon we were under pressure. I’m very pleased with our performance.”

Meanwhile, Javi Martinez and Robert Lewandowski scored second-half goals as Bayern beat AEK Athens 2-0 in Greece.

ABU DHABI: Pakistan face Australia in the first match of the three-match T20 series in a bid to defend their world number one ranking starting today in Abu Dhabi.

Skipper Sarfraz Ahmed led Pakistan to a tri-series triumph by beating Australia in the final at Harare in July this year and needs to win at least one match to remain at the top of the rankings.

Pakistan will be without senior batsman Shoaib Malik who was with his tennis star wife Sania Mirza in India for the birth of their first child.

“Malik will join the team on Wednesday but will not be part of the eleven, so we are ready for Australia who are a very strong T20 side,” said Sarfraz.

Australia, who beat Pakistan in the group match of the tri-series, need to win 3-0 if they want to jump from their current third position to the top.

Since Sarfraz took over the captaincy, Pakistan have won 23 of the 27 matches they have played — a momentum the skipper wants to maintain.

“We know that Australia have good bowlers like Mitchell Starc, Billy Stanlake and hitters in Chris Lynn and D’Arcy Short so we have to be at our best to beat them,” said Sarfraz.

Stanlake took 4-8 in a lively spell in Australia’s victory in the tri-series group game.

Australia will also have some fresh players after losing the two-match Test series 1-0 last week, also played in the United Arab Emirates.

Their T20 skipper Aaron Finch said his team was motivated enough to win the series.

“Pakistan played very well against us in July,” said Finch. “We got the better off them in the first game but they battled back in the last two. They are world number one at the moment and they are world number one for a reason.”

“They played some great cricket in the last two years in this format so I think it will be a great contest.”

Finch played down the bounty of getting to the top of the rankings in case they win all the matches.

“I think any time you play anyone in a different country it’s massively important and everyone wants to win,” said Finch, who has won eight of the 16 matches, losing the other eight since in charge for four years.

“If number one rankings are on the line or anyone down the list, each game is important. Everyone wants to win. I don´t think they need any motivation than that and we don’t need it.”

LAHORE:(Net News/ Media 92 News) The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the police to enforce use of helmets by motorcyclists, as part of implementation of traffic laws across the province.

The court issued the order on a petition filed by a lawyer who contended that a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) had revealed that in Pakistan, 25.3 deaths per 100,000 occurred due to road accidents, which was much higher than international statistics.

The petitioner asked the court to direct the police to implement traffic laws across the province, including wearing of helmets by motorcyclists. He also asked that the government be directed to fix prices of helmets so that the profiteers could not extort money from the public.

Justice Ali Akbar Qureshi then directed the Punjab IGP to strictly enforce the use of helmets by motorcyclists without any discrimination and submit a compliance report within a week.

(Net News/ Media 92 News)The rape and murder of a teenager provoked unprecedented protests in conservative Nepal, but activists say a #MeToo reckoning like that unfolding in neighbouring India remains a distant prospect.

Thousands poured onto the streets after 13-year-old Nirmala Pant´s body was discovered in July angered by allegations the police were protecting the perpetrators.

Two hashtags — #RageAgainstRape and #JusticeForNirmala — have become the rallying cries for protesters fed up with Nepal´s woeful record of prosecuting cases of violence against women.

But #MeToo has been largely absent from the ongoing debate. Those fighting for change say women still struggle to speak out against their abusers in Nepal.

“I would love a society where you can say #MeToo,” said women´s rights activist Hima Bista.

In recent weeks the #MeToo movement in neighbouring India has gathered pace, a year after the hashtag first went viral.

The public allegations by Bollywood star Tanushree Dutta against a fellow actor emboldened a wave of women in India to tell their own stories.

A government minister, MJ Akbar, resigned this month after at least 20 women accused him of sexual harassment. A prominent Bollywood director was also sacked over similar allegations.

The shockwaves have not gone unnoticed in Nepal, which shares strong cultural and religious ties with its influential neighbour, as well as a 1,850-kilometre (1,150-mile) open border.

“You see a slight breeze come through,” Bista said of the ripple effect from India.

In the last two weeks, a handful of women have gone public with #MeToo stories in Nepal, including two accusing the former mayor of Kathmandu, Keshav Sthapit, of abusing his power.

“Nepal also has serial predators who have been misusing their powers and positions,” wrote Rashmila Prajapati, who says she lost her job in Sthapit´s office 15 years ago after she rejected his sexual advances.

“(It) is high time to reveal them.”

Sthapit has denied the allegations, describing them as “a rape of men´s rights” in an recent interview with the Kathmandu Post newspaper.

‘Fight for justice’
But for most women in Nepal, particularly those in conservative rural communities, speaking out is not an option, says Mohna Ansari of the National Human Rights Commission.

She is supporting two rape victims who brought their cases to court — a rare achievement in itself.

But the women have been driven from their communities by gossip, a byproduct of speaking out about sexual violence.

“They are now both hiding in a shelter. The stigma and victim blaming is still too strong in our society,” said Ansari.

Bista is concerned that Nepal may not be ready for #MeToo, pointing out that so far only professional women in Kathmandu have felt able to speak out.

“And the reaction has been very divided for and against (them),” she added.

A change needs to come from the top, but the government´s response to Pant´s killing, the botched investigation and the ensuing protests has invoked outrage and derision.

Parliament passed a ban on pornography saying it would curb violence against women, while the home minister blamed rape on capitalism. He also described the #RageAgainstRape protest movement as a conspiracy aimed at toppling Nepal´s communist-led government.

There have been small signs of progress: official figures show 479 complaints of rape and attempted rape were made from July to September this year — more than the total number of cases filed between 2008 and 2009 — suggesting the protests have encouraged some to speak up.

In 2016 to 2017, 1,131 rapes were reported to the police, but only a tiny fraction ended up in court.

Sexual violence is making news too. An acid attack on two sisters by a jilted suitor in late September, and the gang rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl, dominated headlines for days.

But activists say the sensationalist coverage and gratuitous detail paints women as weak victims with no agency — undermining their ability to call out their abusers.

“Once we address the culture, then you have space for #MeToo,” said Bista.

Pant´s killers meanwhile remain at large.

“I don´t have any hope of justice, because the investigations have come up with nothing despite public pressure,” her father, Yagya Raj Pant, told AFP by phone.

“But we still continue our fight for justice.”

Indonesia, second only to China as the world´s biggest contributor to marine debris, deployed 700 cleaners and 35 trucks to remove roughly 100 tonnes of debris each day from Kuta and two other popular beaches to a nearby landfill.

Easter Island, Chile

Known for its 900-odd human figures standing up to 10 metres (32 feet) tall, the isolated Pacific island severely curtailed visitor numbers in August this year due to concerns over the remote Chilean territory´s environmental sustainability.

Tourist stays on the island, believed to have been settled by the Rapa Nui people around the 12th century, were cut to 30 days from 90, after the population — along with the crime rate — doubled in a few decades.

Those who wish to live on the island are now required to be a parent, partner or child of the Rapa Nui people.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik, which boasts an old walled city, saw cruise ship arrivals shoot through the roof after it was used as a backdrop in the smash television drama series “Game of Thrones”, causing congestion as tourists made a beeline for the shoot locales.

Mayor Mato Frankovic told AFP the authorities plan to cut cruise ship numbers coming into the Adriatic port, while deploying cameras to count the number of people entering the old town.

Venice and Florence, Italy

Venice authorities are trialling a system that forces visitors to make a reservation if they want to go to the popular Saint Mark´s Square during peak hours.

They are also fining tourists 500 euros ($585) for bathing or having picnics in the city´s famous canals.

In Florence, officials have resorted to hosing down public spots such as church steps where many visitors congregate to eat picnics. This aims to prevent people from sitting on the wet pavement.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Peruvian authorities increased surveillance at the 15th-century Incan citadel high in the Andes mountain range in 2014 as nude photos and streaking became increasingly common.

Tourists have since at least 2013 been posting their naked selfies on social media, which the government described as a “disrespectful act” aimed solely at getting attention.

Maya Bay, Thailand

The glittering Thai bay immortalised in the movie “The Beach” was closed indefinitely on October 1 to allow it to recover from the impact of mass tourism, after a four-month respite failed to ease beach erosion and pollution.

About 5,000 tourists had arrived by boat each day to the beach framed by limestone cliffs that was made famous by the 2000 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

ISLAMABAD:(Net News/ Media 92 News) Finance Minister Asad Umar will chair a special meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) today (Wednesday).

The ECC members will discuss an increase in the power tariff.

During the last meeting on October 22, ECC members had deferred the decision on increase in the power tariff and decided to meet today to consider it.

Sources had said, “The government wants to increase the power tariff in two phases. The Ministry of Power has sought permission from National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) regarding increasing the power tariff by Rs3.74/unit in two phases, however, the government is facing difficulty in increasing the price after NEPRA’s new tariff.”

“NEPRA has upheld that the phase-wise rise will further increase the government’s economic problems,” they added.

Earlier this month, an International Monetary Fund (IMF) team which visited Pakistan called for a further hike in gas and power tariffs.

An IMF team led by Harald Finger visited Islamabad from September 27 to October 4 to discuss Pakistan’s economic situation and exchange views on necessary policies for economic stabilisation and sustainable and inclusive growth. At the end of the visit, Finger “welcomed the policy measures implemented since last December” which include 18 per cent cumulative depreciation of the rupee, interest rate increases of cumulatively 275 bps, fiscal consolidation through the budget supplement proposed by the minister of finance, a large increase in gas tariffs closer to cost recovery levels, and the proposed increase in electricity tariffs.

“These measures are necessary steps that go in the right direction,” the IMF mission head said.

KARACHI:(Net News/ Media 92 News) Stocks surged at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Wednesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index gaining 1,227 points to reach 38942.53 points.

The index gained by 3.26 per cent as the market opened on Wednesday.

Further, the US dollar also saw a fall of Rs1.21 against the rupee in the interbank market. The dollar was being traded at Rs132.70.

A day earlier, a statement from Prime Minister Imran Khan’s office said that Saudi Arabia will provide Pakistan with a deposit of $3 billion for a period of one year as “balance of payment support”.

“It was agreed that Saudi Arabia will place a deposit of USD 3 Billion for a period of one year as balance of payment support,” the statement said.

“It was also agreed that a one year deferred payment facility for import of oil, up to $3 billion, will be provided by Saudi Arabia. This arrangement will be in place for three years, which will be reviewed thereafter.”
The development comes as PM Imran visited Riyadh where the prime minister launched a charm offensive targeting potential investors as Pakistan seeks to secure funds amid a yawning balance of payment crisis.

Apart from attending the Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference, the Pakistani premier also met with King Salman bin Abdul Aziz and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to discuss matters of mutual interest.

According to the statement, the visit by the Pakistan premier to the kingdom has resulted in significant understandings between the two countries.

Far-reaching decisions on bilateral economic and financial cooperation were also agreed during the meetings with Saudi leadership, the statement said.

KARACHI/WASHINGTON:(Net News/ Media 92 News) The United States has made it clear to Pakistan that its “South Asia policy has not changed”, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday night.

Pompeo made the comment as he welcomed long-delayed legislative elections in Afghanistan, saying the United States was ‘encouraged’ by voter turnout, despite reports of widespread problems including poll centers that failed to open or lacked voter rolls.

“Our expectation is that Pakistan will not provide safe harbour to terrorists on their western border,” Pompeo told reporters when asked about Islamabad’s role.

“We couldn´t have made that message any more clear,” he said, adding: “Pakistan will be held to account if they don’t achieve that, if they’re not sincere in that effort.”

Noting that he “met with Pakistani leaders a few weeks ago”, Pompeo while referring to all stakeholders said, “Everyone wants a reconciliation in Afghanistan and to achieve that, you can’t have a safe harbour for Taliban, for Haqqani and for others inside of Pakistan.”

“Hope Pakistan achieves [the] goal we have set for them,” he stated.

President Donald Trump’s administration last month cut $300 million in military aid to Pakistan.

Pakistan has said that it has paid a heavy price internally for fighting militants and that it can help bring the Taliban to the table.

A Taliban delegation earlier this month met in Qatar with a US envoy. Prime Minister Imran Khan is a longstanding supporter of negotiations to end the war in Afghanistan, where the United States has been deployed since 2001.

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board has advertised a new position of managing director who can play a leading role in implementing the changes arising from its review of domestic cricket and governance structure.
As stated in the advertisement, candidates should possess a master’s degree or its professional equivalent in order to be considered for the post. The age limit for applying is 55 years.

The PCB will offer a contract for an initial period of three years.

Interested candidates can submit their applications till November 12.

Key responsibilities would include successfully conducting international cricket matches, home or away, including the Pakistan Super League; working with the federal and provincial governments to protect the interests of cricket; developing domestic cricket infrastructure; and implementing governance and transparency, among others.

According to sources, Arif Abbasi, Saleem Altaf, and Zahid Noorani are strong candidates for the MD post.

(Net News/ Media 92 News)WASHINGTON: CIA Director Gina Haspel was travelling to Turkey on Monday to help investigate the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, two sources familiar with the matter said, as security agencies examined what role Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman may have played in the case.

Khashoggi, who was living in Washington, disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get documents for his forthcoming marriage.

Earlier on Monday, US President Donald Trump said he was still not satisfied with what he had heard from Saudi Arabia about the killing.

Saudi Arabia said on Saturday that Khashoggi, 59, was killed in a fight in the consulate. A Saudi official later told Reuters that 15 Saudi nationals sent to Turkey to confront Khashoggi had threatened him with being drugged and kidnapped and then killed him in a chokehold when he resisted.

The Khashoggi case has caused international outrage and frayed political and business ties between Western powers and US ally Saudi Arabia, the world’s No.1 oil exporter.

Three weeks after Khashoggi disappeared, the US and European security agencies still have an incomplete picture of what happened at the consulate.

Six US and Western officials said on Monday they believed the crown prince, who is Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler, was ultimately responsible for Khashoggi’s disappearance because of his role overseeing the Saudi security apparatus but that they lacked hard proof.

Turkish officials suspect Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, was killed inside the consulate on October 2 by a team of Saudi agents and his body cut up.

The Western security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they were far from having a complete picture of what happened to Khashoggi. They do not know how he died and where his body was taken.

Despite extensive news leaks alleging that Turkey has audio recordings documenting Khashoggi’s torture and murder, neither US nor allied government agencies had been granted access as of Monday to such evidence, the officials said.

For Western allies of Saudi Arabia, a main question in the Khashoggi death is whether they believe that Prince Mohammed, who has painted himself as a reformer, has any culpability.

Trump said last week the prince “totally” denied any knowledge of Khashoggi’s disappearance.

The Western government experts’ confidence that Prince Mohammed had some responsibility for the operation relies heavily on their assessment of the dominant role he plays in running the Saudi government, said two sources familiar with intelligence reports.

“Difficult to say MBS did not know about this,” a Western security source said, using the crown prince’s initials.

But US and allied intelligence reporting that details any specific instructions the crown prince might have issued about the Khashoggi incident is not conclusive, the sources said.

‘Top intelligence people’
That leaves open questions such as whether the Saudi operation in Istanbul was always intended to result in Khashoggi’s death or whether the original plan was to kidnap and transport him to Saudi Arabia.

Trump said on Monday: “I spoke to the crown prince. We have people over in Saudi Arabia now. We have top intelligence people in Turkey. We’re going to see what we have. I’ll know a lot tomorrow.”

Turkish officials provided the US and Western officials with verbal accounts of evidence they say they collected documenting Khashoggi’s fate, the officials said.

One European security source said the information Turkey had shared verbally was “very detailed and they sound confident.”

The US and its allies also have some independent intelligence reporting supporting media reports that Khashoggi was murdered inside the consulate by a military squad sent from Saudi Arabia to Istanbul, two sources said.
