ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Dr Arif Alvi, who was declared the 13th president of the country will take oath of office today (Sunday).

Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Saqib Nisar will administer the oath to Alvi.

The ceremony will be attended by Mamnoon Hussain, the former president, Prime Minister Imran Khan, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), members of the federal cabinet, judges and foreign ambassadors.

He will take over the office from Mamnoon Hussain, the former president who completed his tenure on Saturday.

Alvi who was elected to the National Assembly as a candidate of the PTI from Karachi’s NA-247 constituency during the July 25 polls, resigned from his seat earlier this week.
Arif Alvi — the newly elected President

Born in 1949 and a dentist by profession, Arif Alvi is among the founding members of the PTI.

Even during his student years, Arif ur Rehman Alvi had an inclination towards politics. While studying at the De’Montmorency College of Dentistry in Lahore, he was an active member of student unions protesting against the then-President Gen. Ayub Khan. Later, in 1979, he decided to run for office as a candidate of the Jamaat-e-Islami, for a provincial constituency in Karachi, his hometown.

The dentist tried his luck in the political arena again in 1996. That year, he joined the lesser-known and fledgeling political party lead by the cricket star, Imran Khan.

Alvi ran for the seat of Provincial Assembly of Sindh as a candidate of PTI from constituency PS-114 (Karachi) in General Election 1997, however, he remained unsuccessful.

He ran for the seat of Provincial Assembly of Sindh in General Election 2002 as a candidate of PTI from constituency PS-90 (Karachi-II) but remained unsuccessful. He secured only 1,276 votes in the poll.

He served as the secretary general of PTI from 2006 to 2013.

Alvi was elected as the member of the National Assembly of Pakistan for the first time in General Election 2013 on a PTI ticket from NA-250 constituency of Karachi.

Alvi was the only PTI member to win a National Assembly seat from Sindh in the 2013 elections.

In 2016, he was made the president of PTI Sindh chapter.

He was re-elected to the National Assembly as a candidate of PTI from Constituency NA-247 (Karachi South-II) in General Election 2018.

On September 4, members of the national and provincial assemblies voted Alvi as the President of Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: Incumbent President Mamnoon Hussain’s tenure will end on Saturday (today).

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Dr Arif Alvi, who was declared the 13th president of the country on Tuesday, will take over the office of the country’s president on September 9.

Speaking at his farewell meeting with officers and staff of the President House, Mamnoon said, the country’s development and prosperity lie in rule of law and supremacy of the Constitution.

President Mamnoon said he is leaving the presidency after completing his term with “full satisfaction”.

“I left no stone unturned in fulfilling the responsibilities given to me by the people of Pakistan,” he added.

The president further added, “During my tenure, I strictly remained within the constitutional limits and powers.”

He also thanked his staff for their cooperation in enabling him to fulfill his official duties in an amicable manner.

Moreover, he advised his staff to pay special attention towards the education and training of their children for Pakistan’s better future and development of the society.
Mamnoon Hussain’s profile

Originally a businessman, Mamnoon started his career in politics as a Muslim Leaguer in 1969.

At the time, he was made joint secretary of the Karachi chapter of the League when former minister of state for foreign affairs Zain Noorani was its president.

He did his MBA from the prestigious Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi as well as Darse Nizami course. Mamnoon originally hails from Agra (India).

Mamnoon has his textile business and office in Allahwali Market Karachi.

He was seen actively involved in the Pakistan Mulsim League (PML-N) since 1993 when Nawaz Sharif was in the opposition.

Before Mamnoon was appointed governor of Sindh by then prime minister Nawaz in 1999 to serve in this position for less than six months, he worked as adviser to the provincial chief minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi for an insignificant portfolio.

After the promulgation of military rule in October 1999, Mamnoon firmly stood with Nawaz when multitudes of PML-N leaders simply abandoned their party.

During the period starting in 1993, Mamnoon held different positions in the Sindh branch of the party.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday officially declared Dr Arif Alvi of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) as the winner of yesterday’s presidential election.
Dr Alvi was declared as the 13th president of Pakistan after an official count showed he had managed to bag the most number of votes from among the three candidates, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman and PPP’s Aitzaz Ahsan being the other two.
The results of Tuesday’s election were prepared in the presence of the three aspirants’ representatives at the ECP headquarters today, with Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Muhammad Raza serving as the returning officer (RO).
, Dr Alvi secured 352 electoral votes — 44 more than his two rivals could collectively obtain. Rehman and Ahsan clinched 184 and 124 electoral votes, respectively.
A total of 1,110 votes were cast during the election that was simultaneously held at the Parliament House in the capital, and the provincial assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, the notification revealed. Of these, 28 votes were declared invalid.
Dr Alvi bagged 212 out of 424 valid votes polled at the parliament, where MNAs and senators voted jointly.
He secured more votes than his opponents in all legislatures, except the provincial assembly of Sindh — the province he belongs to and from where he had contested and won two consecutive elections of the National Assembly.
The ECP has sent the official results to the federal government, which will notify Dr Alvi as the 13th president of Pakistan.
He will replace President Mamnoon Hussain, who is set to complete his term on September 9.

The newly elected premier will be addressing the nation today evening, the sources said.

On Saturday, Khan assumed charge of the office after taking oath as 22nd prime minister of Pakistan. He was administered the oath by President Mamnoon Hussain.

The prime minister has also approved a 20-member federal cabinet, which will be sworn in on Monday, a spokesman for the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) confirmed on Saturday.

The cabinet will comprise 15 federal ministers and five advisers, PTI spokesman Fawad Chaudhry said on Twitter.

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana stepped down from his post on Wednesday, saying he had sent his resignation letter to President Mamnoon Hussain.

Rajwana, who is originally from Multan and was appointed as Governor Punjab in May 2015, quit from the governorship days ahead of the new Prime Minister’s oath-taking ceremony.

Afterwards, he travelled to the Lahore High Court (LHC) Bar Association to announce the decision and address his peers. The decision was made after a discussion with the party leadership, Rajwana said, adding that new governments, currently being formed, can nominate their own governor.

Garbed in a black suit that is symbolic of those who practice law, he said: “I won’t be performing my duties anymore.”

At the LHC Bar Association, where he was given a warm welcome by the lawyers present, he said he started his professional life with a “black coat” and, thus, “coming to the LHC Bar is an honour for me.

“The bar is my home… I have returned home,” he added.

The now-ex-governor also commented on his role as the governor of the country’s biggest province, saying he was pleased that his party’s leadership entrusted him with the position and that he tried “my best to honour that trust.

“I fulfilled constitutional responsibilities in a decent manner,” noted Rajwana, who assumed Punjab governor office in May 2015.

He had done so almost four months after his predecessor, Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar, had resigned. Sarwar went on to join the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) later.

Prior to this post, he had served as a senator of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

KARACHI: Pakistan is celebrating 71st Independence Day today with patriotic fervor as commemorative ceremonies are being held across the country to mark the day.

The day began with a thirty-one gun salute in the federal capital and twenty-one gun salute in the provincial headquarters.

A change of guard ceremony was held at Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi as cadets of Pakistan Navy took charge of their duties at the mausoleum.

Commandant Pakistan Naval Academy Commodore Waqar Muhammad was the chief guest at the ceremony.

The main highlight of the celebrations was a national flag hoisting ceremony at Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad. President Mamnoon Hussain was the chief guest on the occasion.

The president and caretaker Prime Minister retired Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk unfurled the national flag and the participants sang the national anthem together. The three services chiefs were also present on the occasion.

In his speech, President Mamnoon Hussain said, “This is the day of true celebrations. August 14 rejuvenates our spirit.” He felicitated the nation on the 71st anniversary of Independence Day.

The president stressed the need for unity to steer the country out of the crises confronted by it.

He said a message is hidden in Independence Day and general elections, adding that people exercised their right to franchise on July 25 and this day reminded us that the fate of the country is to be decided through ballot.

In his message, PM Mulk said August 14 reminds us of the epic democratic struggle of our forefathers for securing a separate homeland for the Muslims of the subcontinent where they could fashion their lives according to their religious, cultural and social values.

He said the unswerving commitment to the ideals of the Quaid and following the principle of ‘Unity, Faith and Discipline’ would certainly help us overcome our present-day challenges and make Pakistan a self-reliant, economically vibrant and a prosperous country.

Flag hoisting ceremonies are being held in the provincial capitals and each district headquarters.

ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain and caretaker Prime Minister Justice (retd) Nasir-ul-Mulk extended heartiest felicitations to all Pakistanis on the occasion of Independence Day.

President Mamnoon, in his message to the nation on 71st Independence Day, said that in order to rid the country of political, social, economic and other complex issues, the nation will have to rise above its personal and factional differences.

The dream of taking the country to the zenith would not come true unless we singularly concentrate on our national goals and objectives, he said.

He said on this day, our devotion to honour our national flag enhances manifold as it is the day for fulfillment of our hopes and aspirations.

“Pakistan is a haven and a blessing for the Muslims of the subcontinent and was liberated after numerous sacrifices by our forefathers. Now it is our responsibility to take our country forward on the path of progress and prosperity according to the aspirations of its founders. This requires all segments of the society to live together with harmony and brotherhood,” the president stated.

Pakistan celebrates 71 years of independence

He remarked it was satisfactory to note that the country’s new generation is full of patriotism, and has a sincere passion for its development and progress.

He added that the economic problems being faced by Pakistan and the complex issues confronting it can only be overcome by following the teachings of Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Iqbal in their true spirit.

Prime Minister Nasir-ul-Mulk, in his message on the occasion, said August 14 reminds us of the epic democratic struggle of our forefathers for securing a separate homeland for the Muslims of the sub-continent where they could fashion their lives according to their religious, cultural and social values.

The premier said an unswerving commitment to Quaid’s ideals and his principle of ‘Unity, Faith and Discipline’ would help us overcome our present-day challenges and make Pakistan a self-reliant, economically vibrant and a prosperous country.

As the clock struck midnight, fireworks began across the country while buildings were lit up to celebrate Independence Day.

The morning dawned with a 31 gun salute in the federal capital and 21 gun salute in the provincial headquarters.

Fatiha was offered at Quaid’s Mausoleum in Karachi
A change of guard ceremony was held at the Quaid’s mausoleum in Karachi and Iqbal’s mausoleum in Lahore, where cadets of Pakistan Navy took charge of their duties. Commandant Pakistan Naval Academy Commodore Waqar Muhammad was the chief guest at the ceremony.

Special prayers were offered in mosques at dawn for peace, solidarity, and prosperity of the country and for the resolution of the long-standing issue of Kashmir.

In educational institutions, exhibitions, declamation contests, national songs, competitions and tableau shows are being held to mark the day.

At 8:59am, sirens were sounded and the moving traffic came to a halt as a mark of national solidarity.

President urges harmony for progress

The highlight of the celebrations was a national flag-hoisting ceremony held at Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad. President Mamnoon Hussain, the chief guest, addressed the ceremony on the auspicious occasion.

The president urged the nation to rise above its personal and factional differences and follow the Quaid’s vision and principles for a prosperous Pakistan.

Underlining the need for harmony in the society for progress, he said a strong, developed and democratic Pakistan is our goal.

President Mamnoon remarked that the decisions in the country which were achieved through a democratic struggle will also be taken through the power of vote.

He urged for awareness of youth and next generations about the sacrifices rendered by our ancestors for the freedom of our motherland.

He said the political leaders, intellectuals and the media will also have to play their role for promotion of unity and steer the country out of current challenges.

The president paid tribute to the sacrifices of the sons and daughters of the soil in establishing peace in the country, and reiterated Pakistan’s unswerving political and moral support for Kashmiris in Indian-occupied valley.

Caretaker Prime Minister Justice (retd) Nasir-ul-Mulk, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, and other foreign and local dignitaries were also in attendance.

ISLAMABAD: The inaugural session of the 15th National Assembly will be held shortly at the Parliament House in the federal capital, where the newly elected lawmakers will be sworn in.

Outgoing Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq will administer oath to the MNA-elects.

The first sessions of the new Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Balochistan assemblies will also be convened today. The Punjab Assembly session, on the other hand, is slated for August 15 after the Independence Day.

Elections for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly will be held on August 15.

President Mamnoon Hussain approved the NA’s first session for August 13 on the request of caretaker prime minister Justice (retd) Nasir-ul-Mulk.

The swearing-in will mark the third consecutive democratic transfer of power in the country.

PM selection subject to nomination papers’ submission
The selection of the prime minister is conditional on the submission of their nomination papers on August 16, which, if done as per schedule, would pave way for the process to be completed by the evening on the same day. Otherwise, the selection will be done on the morning of August 17.

The Prime Minister-elect’s oath-taking ceremony is slated for August 18, at the President House.

Once the allotment of general seats was finalised, those reserved for women and minorities were also allocated to the political parties.

PTI leads with 158 NA seats
Leading the race with the most number of MNA-elects is the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) with 158 seats (125 general, 28 women and five minorities).

However, candidates elected to more than one seat are required to vacate all except one, which would reduce the tally for the Imran Khan-led PTI, leaving them to rely on support from Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s seven members, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s five, Balochistan Awami Party’s five, and Balochistan National Party-Mengal’s four members.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is in second place with a total of 82 seats, after winning 64 general seats, two minority seats and 16 women seats.

The Pakistan Peoples Party is at a distant third with a total of 53 seats, with 42 general seats, two seats reserved for minorities, and nine reserved for women.

Security arrangements finalised
From Bani Gala to the Parliament House, security arrangements have been finalised, authorities and sources confirmed, while additional measures will also be implemented for the NA session.

According to sources, the security in the district, including the red zone areas, will be on “red alert”, and only people with special passes will be allowed into the Parliament.

Police and Rangers have been deployed in the area. No random person would be let into the red zone.

ISLAMABAD:( media92news)President Mamnoon Hussain has summoned the new session of the National Assembly on Aug 13, approving a summary sent to him by caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk for the purpose.
The prime minister forwarded the summary on Thursday after the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) called upon the interim government to summon the session of the lower house so that the process of formation of the new government could take place.
The PTI also asked President Hussain to drop his plan to proceed to Ireland on a three-day official visit on Aug 16 as uncertainty prevails whether prime minister-in-waiting Imran Khan can take the oath of his office on Aug 14 or not.
PTI spokesman Fawad Chaudhry expressed the hope that Mr Khan would take the oath between Aug 15 and 17. He said the absence of the president did not matter as Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani — who acts as acting president — could administer the oath of PM office to Imran Khan.
Media reports suggest that it is a desire of Mr Khan to take the oath on Independence Day — Aug 14.
Mr Chaudhry claimed that the PTI had secured 180 seats in the National Assembly to form its government at the Center. “There is no hurdle in Imran Khan’s way to become next prime minister of the country.”
He said the PTI had also won 186 seats of the Punjab Assembly out of total 372.
He said a meeting of the PTI’s Sindh parliamentary party had decided that the party would gift mega development projects to Karachi. He said Mr Khan had directed the party’s provincial leaders to focus on underdeveloped areas of interior Sindh.
PTI leader Naeemul Haq told the media that his party had demanded an early session of the National Assembly. In reply to a question, he said it was a job of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), and not the PTI, to reopen constituencies and issue notifications of successful candidates.
On the other hand, sources in the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) told Dawn that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif urged President Hussain and the governors of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan to follow the example of ex-governor of Sindh Muhammad Zubair and step down from their offices.
However, sources close to the president told Dawn that Mr Hussain would not tender his resignation, but decided to leave for Ireland to attend an award-distribution ceremony of Royal Collage of Physician where he would also receive an honourary degree. One of the reasons behind the president’s visit is said to be an escape to avoid administering the oath to Imran Khan.
It has been learnt that soon after Imran Khan takes the oath as 21st prime minister of the country, the governors of three provinces are likely to step down.
Sources close to Nawaz Sharif told media92news that he was unhappy and wondered why the president and three governors appointed by the last PML-N government were still sitting in their offices when Muhammad Zubair had resigned on July 28.
“Why they [president and three governors] stick to their seats when Zubair has stepped down,” the incarcerated PML-N supreme leader was quoted as telling some party leaders who had met him at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences.
Mr Sharif was of the view that President Hussain should not administer oath to Imran Khan and resign immediately.
The PML-N leadership feared that that if the president and three governors did not resign, they could be removed by the new PTI-led government which would cause humiliation for the N-League.
