MELBOURNE: Captain Tim Paine admitted Sunday Australia badly needed the banned Steve Smith and David Warner back in the side after more woeful batting in the third Test against India.

Other than tailender Pat Cummins, no Australian passed 50 in the 137-run defeat in Melbourne, exposing their lack of depth, poor discipline and questionable technique.

Paine acknowledged that not having world-class batsmen was hindering their chances of competing with teams like India, ranked number one in the world.

“I think it´s inexperience, it´s pressure, India´s bowling attack is probably as good as most of us have ever played,” he said.

“I think it´s pretty clear that if you take two or three of the best players out of anyone´s line-up around the world, you´re going to struggle a little bit at times and you are going to have inconsistent performances.

“The silver lining is that we do have world-class players that are available soon to come back into this side, and clearly when they do they will make a huge difference.”

Smith and Warner´s year-long suspensions for ball-tampering run out in late March.

Australia were skittled for 151 in their first innings reply to India´s 443 for seven declared. That total was built on the back of Cheteshwar Pujara´s patient 106 and Virat Kohli´s restrained 82.

Australian batting coach Graeme Hick said his team needed to look and learn from Pujara and Kohli.

“We spoke about how Kohli went about it (his 82). We knew Pujara, and even Kohli, one of the most explosive batters, got to 20 off 25, 26 balls, then the rest of his innings took whatever it was,” he said.

“For the best player in the world to change his innings and play like that, if you can´t be on the same field as him and watch him and learn from what he is doing, then you are in the wrong space.

“There are certainly things our players can take out of that. It takes a lot of discipline, a lot of patience and, on top of that, you have got to bat with intent.”

Aaron Finch again struggled at the top of the order, with his role as a Test opener under intense scrutiny with growing speculation that he will be axed for the next Test in Sydney this week.

Mitch Marsh also failed again with the bat, and fellow all-rounder Marnus Labuschagne has been added to the squad.

Paine wouldn´t be drawn on what changes might be made.

“I think they´ll be a lot of things on the table in the next day or two and of course I have some thoughts on what I think but I will share them with JL (coach Justin Langer) before I share them here,” he said.

“But I think we have the best group of players available to us at the moment and we´ll pick the best combination of that group that we think will win this last Test.”

MELBOURNE: Cheteshwar Pujara raised his second century of the series in a stubborn partnership with captain Virat Kohli as the pair pushed India to 277 for two at lunch in the heat of day two of the third test against Australia on Thursday.

Pujara was 103 not out and Kohli on 69, the pair having built an 154-run stand as Australia’s bowlers were condemned to a morning of toil on a lifeless Melbourne Cricket Ground wicket.

Having come together at tea on day one, Pujara and Kohli resumed at 215 for two in the morning, with the temperature already pushing 30 degrees Celsius (86F).

Kohli had been well-pinned down before stumps on the first day, going run-less for more than 20 deliveries.

Resuming on 47 on Thursday he was finally given a full, loose delivery by seamer Pat Cummins, and gratefully whipped the ball off his pads for three to bring up his 20th test fifty.

Cummins, who has troubled Kohli the most among Australia’s bowlers during the series, did his best to hit back at the skipper, beating his bat with a couple of unplayable deliveries.

Josh Hazlewood also induced an edge that flew wide of the slips but Kohli survived and later smacked the bowler for four with a sumptuous straight drive.

Australia continued to bowl tight lines but gained little assistance from the pitch, as India’s batsmen bided their time and pounced on looser balls.

Pujara began to attack off-spinner Nathan Lyon, roughing him up with an imperious cover drive for four, and later smashed a delivery to the long off fence to bring up his 17th test century.

Pujara also scored 123 in Adelaide to help India claim the series-opener.

Rubbing salt into the wounds, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh induced a leading edge from Pujara in the last over before lunch but the ball flew wide of the diving fielder at point.

With only two wickets produced by a world class attack in four sessions of cricket, Australia’s bowlers face further work in the searing conditions with the temperature tipped to reach 36 degrees Celsius.

The four-match series is poised at 1-1, after Australia won the second match in Perth.

MELBOURNE: Australian fast bowler John Hastings has retired from all forms of cricket fearing a mystery ailment could lead him to bleed to death on the field.

The burly all-rounder, who has represented his country in all three formats of the game, revealed last month he was struggling with an illness that causes him to cough up blood whenever he bowls.

He first noticed the issue several years ago and despite a battery of tests and operations is no closer to knowing why it happens.

“It´s (only) when I bowl. The pressure at the crease, little blood vessels in my lungs burst,” he told The Age newspaper in Melbourne on Wednesday.

“That determines that I cough up blood on a regular basis when I´m trying to bowl. It´s a really scary thing.”

The 33-year-old, who was planning to play in Australia´s Twenty20 Big Bash League next month, said he was otherwise healthy.

His decision to pull the pin came after doctors were unable to reassure him that he wouldn´t bleed to death on the cricket pitch.

“I´m training now. Lifting weights or boxing it doesn´t happen. It´s really only the pressure of the actual landing of bowling,” he said.

“There was just a lot of grey area surrounding long-term health, whether it was causing any damage, and if there was any potential to have a fatal bleed on the field.

“They just really couldn´t say yes or no. And I wasn´t happy with that.”

Hastings, who played one Test, nine T20s and 29 one-day internationals, had been keen to continue his career and cash in on the lucrative T20 circuit.

“I would have loved a Big Bash title. That would have been unbelievable because I think it´s an amazing competition,” he said, adding that he would now pursue a media career and open a cafe in Melbourne.
